Using Relaxation Techniques To Improve Your Health

Every day we are inundated with messages about eating right and getting exercise, but we rarely hear anyone offer advice outside of that. If you are serious about improving your everyday health, then you cannot ignore the mental aspect of your health either. Your body and mind work together and if one of them is unhealthy, then it is likely that the other will be as well. Relaxation can be a great way to improve mental health by helping to relieve stress and stay in a positive state of mind -- more on this on the Stress Reduction Blog. If you are mentally fit, then you are much more likely to react well to adversity which gives you an edge you'll need to be successful in whatever walk of life you choose.

Traditionally, relaxation is taught as some form of meditation where you work on breathing and/or visualization exercises. There is a reason that breathing is so heavily focused upon and it is because your breath is a strong cue to how your internal systems are functioning. If your breath is heavy and sporadic, then the chances are high that your physical body is reacting in the same manner. Taking the time to slow down your breath will slow your heart rate down and help you maintain a level state of mind, thereby improving your everyday health.

The simplest breathing technique requires you to just focus on outward breathing slowly and steadily over the course of 10 breaths. This is a quick and easy way to slow down your "fight or flight" mechanism and help you restore balance. It only takes a minute or so, but the result is much longer lasting. The reason this works is that by focusing on breathing out slowly, your inner breath will begin to slow down as well.

A more advance solution is to close your eyes and pay attention to your breath for several minutes, trying to find the space between the breaths. It isn't easy, but this method will take the focus away from your breath and into a deeper state of internal focus. By the time you come out of this exercise, you should be able to react more positively to stress throughout the day. As you continue to implement these exercises, the relaxed period you sense after the exercise will remain longer and longer. Eventually, your entire personality will change as you learn how to handle stress much more positively, and you will find that your every day health improves as a result.

Many people underestimate the added benefits that using good relaxation techniques can bring to the table. Learning how to deal with stress as it comes, rather than reacting to it after the fact, will help you stay positive and focused, rather than upset or distracted. If you let stress get the best of you, then your physical body may begin to react as well. The best way to avoid this is by finding a relaxation technique that works best for you and using it as often as you can.
